Spring Meet 2018 Stranraer

Spring in Sandhead

Cathie and Jim Cowan were the hosts for the spring meet at Sands of Luce Caravan Park. All fifteen vans had hardstandings overlooking the sands and Bay of Luce.  Basking in the warm Gulf Stream had been suggested but didn’t really come about. The warmth and kindness of the Scottish people we met impressed us all and made up for the mixed weather.
A day trip to Belfast by ferry had been proposed but was deemed impractical because of sailing times and duration. Next time perhaps?
Many of us enjoyed time in Stranraer. The museum and the harbour area were highlights.

Jim led a walk to the Kirkmadrine Stones which are about 1500 years old and evidence of early Christianity in Scotland They are installed behind glass in the porch of the old church. Jim entertained us with extensive local knowledge as we walked.
There were visits to Logan Gardens, Portpatrick village, the lighthouse, the wetland area and more!  Bike riding, fishing, beach combing and dog walking kept us busy..

Many tales were told, van and travel ideas shared.....in the bar on the site....at the Woodlea Tea Room and at the Tigh na Mara (house by the sea) restaurant. We celebrated Judy’s birthday in style at the group meal.
McKenzies' shop in Sandhead was a good source of scones, tinned haggis, newspapers and staples. We were introduced to Tattie  scone rolls and haggis Bon Bons!

The Cowans'  had filled a gazebo with helpful leaflets and maps. Perfect hosts....we felt they knew everyone in the area. Thanks to them......a really good gathering in Scotland.

Thanks to Lyn Pither for the Article and Pictures.
