We have toured France for many years and discovered lovely areas and camp sites.
This year was no exception and we were delighted to discover Brantome on our way north from Perigueux on the D939, approx 20k. Described locally as the Venice of Perigord; it is a compact medieval city on the banks of the Dronne. Surrounded by water, Brantome has a superb Abbey partly set into caves in the limestone cliffs. There are a number of local speciality shops and restaurants, plus a weekly market to rival any in France. There are also two small supermarkets on the outskirts of the town.
For us IH owners there is a choice of a good size motorhome aire, adjacent to the local park, some 200 metres from town, or the Camping Brantome Peyrelevade campsite about one kilometre away on the D78. We found this riverside site superb. Good sized, hedged pitches, modern clean facilities and a pool you could actually swim in!
We got a friendly welcome at reception, where there is a small bar/restaurant. They laid on live musical entertainment here a couple of times a week. There are the usual table tennis, boulle area plus tennis courts adjacent. Details of the site are in the Caravan Club Europe 1 handbook. We enjoyed both the site and Brantome. We booked in for two nights and stayed twelve!!!
