Fold Down Table Leg Modification

We have been frustrated on occasion by the difficulty of using the outside table that folds down at the sliding door, so at last I have got round to modifying it. It should be noted that ours is the older type where the legs are made of tubular square section steel tube. First job was to source some tube that will fit inside the leg tube, I bought one length of 15.5 x 15.5 mm aluminium square tube 1 m long from Wickes for £7.17. Cut the tube into two 500 mm lengths. Remove the table legs from the table.  Mark square across the two legs 30mm up from the foot and hacksaw cut across.  The aluminium tube needs the corners filling down slightly to slide into the leg tubes, put aluminium tubes into the leg tubes.  I had some coach bolts in the garage and so drilled holes about 30 mm down from the cut and put one bolt in. Now drilled a hole again about 30 mm up from the cut.  Remove the first bolt, pulled out the lower part, put the bolt through the aluminium tube and pushed the lower part up to to the bolt. Drilled through the holes in the steel to make holes in the aluminium.  Repeated several times on lower section then continued in a similar way on the upper section.

Re-fixed table leg assembly to table. I put nuts on the coach bolts merely to stop the bolts shaking out on Portugese road system!

Job done, an hour well spent.
